He was originally a policeman stationed at Port Sorell (Tasmania).

On 21 Nov 1833 he married Mary Elizabeth LAMONT at Latrobe.

For reasons unknown he left his first wife and made his way to Broken Hill.

He married again (1891 Catherine GABOR) and then went to New Zealand where he farmed in the Whangarei district of the North Island. He changed his name to HENRY LONG after he settled there.

He had a five children from his second marriage:-
